Why treatment with dental braces (orthodontic treatment) should be done by an ORTHODONTIST ?

Orthodontists are trained dental specialists who are required to put in an additional 3 years of post graduate education after their Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.) degree to gain a Master of Dental Surgery degree (M.D.S.) from universities & colleges approved by the premier body of dental education in India – The Dental Council of India (DCI). In addition, the premier association of Orthodontists in India – The Indian Orthodontic Society (IOS), approves the work carried by these Orthodontists. In addition, postgraduate programs offered by only a few foreign universities are approved by the DCI & recognized by IOS.

Orthodontists are THE ONLY DENTAL SPECIALISTS (M.D.S.) QUALIFIED to do orthodontic treatment. The training over three years on patients, enables them to have a better understanding of what it takes to move teeth and how to get the best results for the patient.

Today there is a proliferation of “certificate courses” and dubious universities & individuals from various countries, offering courses in orthodontic education. These courses are not approved by the DCI & IOS. The training imparted at these courses is grossly inadequate. IOS has sought to tackle this issue of "orthodontic quackery".

Just as you wouldn't go to a general practitioner for getting a speciality treatment like heart problems, or child birth problems, it is important to choose the right person to do the dental braces treatment, which is a speciality job.

Hence for the treatment of your child / self, ALWAYS choose a QUALIFIED Orthodontist , NOT some "certified" dentist, who claims to be an orthodontist, or an "orthodontist" from a university of questionable origins & background.
